At this grade the job holder holds delegated responsibility for delivery of the risk management framework. This role maintains oversight of the risk team delivery, develops organisational insight by maintaining strategic oversight of the organisational risk profile, and developing and providing strategic direction to the risk team. Regular contact and consultancy services are provided to senior leaders across the organisation to support organisational improvement.

Deputising for the Chief Risk Officer as required.
Driving the integration of risk management activity with other governance mechanisms, including assurance, planning and performance, strategy and policy development, planning, change delivery, performance and other relevant functions to build robust governance systems.
Ensuring policies, procedures and guidance reflect new ideas and best practice, and supported by team activities to drive continuous improvement.
Ownership of risk reporting, which provides strong insight to drive strategic decisions / discussions.
Providing expert advice, guidance and support to Executive teams and business groups on all aspects of risk management.
Responsible for the implementation and regular review of the risk management frameworks and delivery of focused improvement plans which improve risk maturity.
Setting the communication and upskilling strategy to enable staff to engage with the risk management framework.
Support the Board when it is setting the overall risk appetite, strategy and architecture of the risk management framework.

Essential, achieved or working towards:
IRM Certificate/ Diploma in Enterprise Risk Management (or equivalent)
Accelerated qualification is available for G6s and SCS1 with the relevant experience.
Suitable for an individual who has held a G7 risk management role such as Senior Risk Manager, Senior Risk Lead, Head of Risk, Deputy Head of Risk or similar.
Suitable for an individual with proven experience in a strategic setting, who has gained experience and insight from regular engagement with the risk profession and is experienced at presenting and engaging at Executive Committee level. An understanding of the Orange Book is essential.
G6s seeking career progression to SCS1 would benefit from exposure to the Heads of Risk Network, leading on the development of best practice with risk professionals across the civil service risk community, setting and directing improvements with demonstrable business improvements to the risk framework, presenting reporting to key governance mechanisms, lead on engagement with executive agencies and ALBs, to ensure alignment of risk frameworks delivery of organisational communication, and engagement with governance mechanisms to optimise integrated risk reporting.
